The ten driving laws you have probably broken without realising

  • We’re all aware that running a red light or parking on double yellow lines is illegal and understand the penalties for doing so. However, Regtransfers have rounded up a few rules that you may not be aware of.

    1.  Eating, drinking, applying makeup or changing CD while driving

    3-9 penalty points and potential for a £100 fine.

     

    2. Using an unfixed mobile phone as a satnav

    £200 fine and up to 6 penalty points.

     

    3. Failing to clear snow from your roof

    £60 fine and 3 penalty points.

     

    4. Paying for your food using your mobile phone at a drive-thru

    £200 fine and up to 6 penalty points.

     

    5. Making a profit from giving someone a lift

    Up to £5,000 in fines and 6 penalty points.

     

    6. Hogging the middle lane of the motorway

    £100 fine and 3 penalty points.

     

    7. Swearing or rude hand gestures to other road users

    Potentially a fine of 75% of your weekly income.

     

    8. Playing excessively loud music from your car

    If the verbal warning is ignored, your car can be seized.

     

    9. Driving too slowly (careless driving)

    Depending on circumstance, anything from a verbal warning to 9 penalty points.

     

    10. Flashing your headlamps to warn others of a speed trap

    A £30 fine – minimum.
